For more than 60 years, our customer has been a global leader in delivering UL-certified, NFPA-compliant backup power solutions known for exceptional quality and long-term reliability. Their systems support mission-critical applications—emergency lighting, traffic management, rail, and broadband—across key sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, government, and commercial infrastructure.
Customer Need
As part of their shift towards sustainable energy, our customer planned a next-generation BESS and required a scalable, cloud-enabled platform to enhance energy efficiency, enable smarter use of renewables, and achieve sustained cost savings. Following a successful engagement with Softdel on an earlier application development initiative, the customer partnered with us again—this time to leverage our deep expertise in battery management and our proven track record in delivering innovative, sustainable IoT solutions—to design and enhance their new BESS solution.
Softdel’s Solution
- Softdel worked closely with the customer to architect and implement a scalable, cloud-enabled BESS management application. The project was executed through the following defined phases:
- Architecture design: Softdel analysed the requirements and designed a scalable, modular, and flexible system architecture to support future growth.
- Cloud & backend implementation: Developed an AWS serverless backend architecture, set up cloud accounts, environments, resources, and configurations for all required AWS services. Established secure data pipelines, backend workflows, and policies for reliable BESS operations.
- Edge integration & secure connectivity: Provisioned edge gateways and established secure cloud–edge communication using IoT certificates and AWS IoT Core. Enabled real-time data integration, provisioning/deprovisioning, communication monitoring, certificate handling, error management, backups, and CloudWatch logging.
- UI/UX development: Designed a responsive Angular-based interface for seamless mobile and desktop use.
- Dashboard capabilities: The BESS application dashboard provided comprehensive monitoring and operational features, including:
- User management and authentication
- API and Google Maps integration
- Area, site, and device hierarchy with device details and their health stats
- Important operational parameters including TOU setup, energy data, events, analog/binary data, BESS runtime, service widgets (installation, commissioning, preventive check-up dates), and EOL tracking
- Event and log capturing, along with report generation and distribution
- Real-time notifications (alarms/alerts), SMS/email notifications, and configurable preferences
- Testing & validation: Conducted manual, functional, and system testing with scenario-based test cases and detailed test reports.
